TRADITIONAL BRACES

Correct your bite and straighten your teeth with traditional braces

Orthodontics correct crooked and crowded teeth. They can also fix a misaligned bite and correct jaw problems. If you have less noticeable problems, like issues eating or speaking properly or even keeping your teeth clean, traditional braces can help with those.

Traditional braces are still the most popular way to straighten teeth because they correct almost every bite issue and offer the biggest bang for the buck. Plus, thanks to advancements in orthodontics, traditional braces are more comfortable and smaller than ever.

When you see Dr. Valeriano, he will help you determine which orthodontic treatment choice is the best for your particular needs. If you choose braces, he will prescribe treatment specific to your needs. Your braces may include bands, wires, and other fixed or removable corrective appliances. No one method works for everyone.

What Are Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces are the metal braces you think of when you think orthodontics. They include the brackets that are attached to your teeth and flexible archwires that hold the brackets or bands together. Braces require tightening every 4-6 weeks to ensure the steady pressure necessary to gradually straighten your teeth and align your jaw. Braces may also include rubber bands or metal ties that link the brackets to the wire to provide added pressure as needed.

Traditional braces usually include these components:

Attached to the outside surfaces of the teeth to hold the archwire.

Encircle the molars to hold the end of the archwire in place.

Flexible wire that connects all of the brackets and bands, and controls movement of the teeth.

Secure the wire to the brackets and produce more corrective pressure.

WHY TRADITIONAL BRACES?

Proper alignment of your teeth and jaws will improve the appearance of your teeth and face. It will also improve the health of your mouth and the way you bite, chew and speak. Braces offer corrective treatment for:

  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Too much space between teeth
  • Overbite or overjet
  • Underbite
  • Uneven bite caused by jaw misalignment problems

Advantages of Traditional Braces:

  • More effective at treating extreme overcrowding
  • Least expensive option
  • Allows small incremental movements
  • No chance of losing braces because they stay in your mouth

TAKING CARE OF BRACES

As with any type of orthodontic appliance, you must follow Dr. Valeriano’s instructions and care for them properly to ensure you don’t damage the braces or your teeth while wearing them. Some things to keep in mind include:

Unfortunately, not all foods are braces-friendly. Avoid things like caramel or taffy, nuts, ice and raw vegetables. Each of these foods can get caught in the braces or damage them.

You must continue to take proper care of your teeth. Brushing and flossing will keep things out of your brackets, help you avoid staining to your teeth as well as keep cavities away.

Don’t stop seeing the dentist while you have braces. You still need regular checkups and cleanings.

These appointments are to make any necessary adjustments to the braces to ensure the most effective outcome.
