Damon Braces: A New Type Of Orthodontics

When it comes to straightening teeth with brackets and wires, there are typically two options: traditional braces treatment and Damon braces. Most people are familiar with traditional braces treatment, but did you know that Damon braces are just as effective and offer many benefits that traditional braces do not?

How Are Damon Braces Different?

Traditional braces use elastic to hold the wire and brackets in place. These elastic bands are very tight, causing friction — and are often painful — as the teeth adjust to the force of the elastics. Damon braces, on the other hand, use a self-ligating system. Instead of elastics, this system uses a built-in sliding mechanism to hold the wire in place and apply gradual pressure that works naturally to adjust the position of teeth.

Additionally, by eliminating the elastic used in traditional braces, Damon braces are much easier to keep clean and bacteria free. There are fewer pieces involved, and therefore, fewer places for food and germs to hide.

Damon braces are also distinctly less conspicuous than traditional braces. If you are self-conscious about the look of braces, Damon braces come in both metal and clear options. They offer a lower profile bracket that is smaller than traditional brackets, and the ligation wire is quite thin, which allows Damon braces to be considerably less conspicuous than their traditional counterparts.

How Are Damon Braces Adjusted?

Whereas traditional braces and elastic bands need regular tightening and adjustments, Damon braces use a memory system that applies pressure to slowly move teeth, in harmony with your body’s natural rhythms. As your body adjusts to the gentle pressure of the Damon braces, your teeth move naturally as opposed to reacting to the force of a manual adjustment by your orthodontist. As a result, Damon braces require fewer, less frequent office visits.

Are Damon Braces Affordable?

The cost of Damon braces is comparable to the cost of traditional braces. However, the average treatment time for Damon braces is 20 months, which is shorter than that of traditional braces and therefore, the overall cost of treatment is lower.

Choosing orthodontic treatment is a big decision for anyone. Knowing your options and the benefits of Damon braces will ease your mind as you pursue better oral health and a more attractive smile.
